Tips for Finding the Perfect Perfume

Sunday, July 21, 2013

Whether you are looking for something sultry and dark for evenings out or light and fresh for summer wear, finding the perfect scent can often be quite difficult.

I know that I often have problems finding the perfect perfumes and tend to stick to the same tried and tested old favorites (Coco by Chanel mostly).

I remember when I was in my teens and a girl I knew wore a gorgeous perfume, I asked her what it was and she told me it was the Yves Saint Laurent, Nu EDT. I immediately asked my mum to get me it for my birthday without trying it on myself and what a mistake I made. Although it smelled gorgeous and woody in the bottle, it just didn’t seem to work well with my skin and all I could smell was those “fireball” sweets when I wore it.  Most perfumes don’t come cheap so buying one without properly testing can be a pricey mistake to make.

If you are looking to try out a new scent here are some of my tips:

1.       Figure out your skin type – Fragrance reacts differently depending on your skin type. If you skin is oily it can enhance the scent of your perfume, moist and oily skin are best suited to lighter scents such as citrus based as they help to balance out the skins natural odours. If your skin is dry the scent may not stick to it as easily so may seem like it disappears quickly.  Heavier/Muskier Scents are best for drier skin types.

2.       Think about where you will wear it – A scent for a night out won’t necessarily mean it will suit the office. If you are looking for one scent to wear all the time I’d stick to a something fresh and light, such as (perfume)

3.       Bring a friend or family member with you when trying out scents – Someone close to you will be able to tell what suits you; it’s also not advisable to pick a scent that they aren’t keen on as they will be the ones who smell it best.

4.       Testing – Try out several scents before settling on one. Spray these on cards first before narrowing down your favourites. After a while you won’t be able to smell them properly so leave the shop for a while and come back if you feel like they all start to smell the same. When you have picked out one you like, test a scent out on your pulse points (neck and wrists) and wait at least 30 min before deciding as this will give the perfume the time to settle into your skin.

5.       Check discount perfume websites – There are loads of websites offering discount perfumes, if I find one I like in a store I always check the internet first to see if I can grab a bargain. Try places like Beautyencounter.com as this has a huge range of discount fragrances and discount colognes.

Some of my favourite scents to wear are Coco by Chanel for evenings and Magnolia Nobile by Aqua di Parma for everyday wear. I also love Flowerbomb by Viktor and Rolf its such a gorgeous, sweet scent.

What scents are your favourites?
