La Riche Directions Hair Dye - Review & Tips

Monday, November 19, 2012

I change my hair colour on an (almost) weekly basis and mostly tend to go for bright, vibrant shades.

So when I look for a hair colour I tend to stick to the same tried and tested products that I've been using for years.
My favourite hair colouring product are from La Riche Hair Cosmetics which is a brand that I've been familiar with for many years ever since my first "grunge rebellion" hair which involved alpine green streaks until my hair today which currently is a tangerine shade.

La Riche Hair Cosmetics sell an array of hair products from colour, colour care and lightning kits as well as Tattsplatt tattoo soothing balm (which I've never tried as I stick to Bepanthen but if you have tried this let me know if its any good).

My favourite product from La Riche is their Directions hair dye, they have a huge range of 34 shades which can all be mixed together to create your own custom colour. They are semi-permanent too so you can happily change your colour anytime without any long term commitment.

I've used most of these shades over the years, at the moment I'm using tangerine but some of my favourites include apple green, poppy red and violet.

Directions dyes come in a little 88ml tub with a screwtop lid which is really handy as it means you never waste any product and these last for about a month if you make sure to keep the lid on properly.
for a full head of shoulder length hair I normally use about 3/4 of a tub and keep the rest for root touch ups.
I find that these dyes last about 4 weeks before having to re-dye as long as you use a good shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair and also making sure you wash with as cool water as you can take as this helps preserve colour.

Another great thing about Directions dyes is the developing time is about 15-30 minutes so its fab if you need to quickly refresh your colour before a big night out.

Some tips for applying this dye are;
  • Wear gloves - they don't come with the tub but you can buy a huge pack of latex gloves in the pound shop.
  • Make sure you cover your skin with barrier cream - Vaseline works best to avoid stained skin.
  • Stick to old clothes and towels - Although its semi permanent it does stain clothing so don't wear anything you want to keep clean while dying.
  • Apply to wet hair - wash with shampoo only, use a small amount of conditioner after rinsing the dye off.
  • The dye will take faster and last longer on chemically treated hair - permed or bleached.
  • Comb into the hair until it emulsifies - becomes frothy, the pigments will have penetrated in to the hair, lighter shades may require a little more combing.
  • If you are using more than one colour, the hair must be dyed, washed and dried separately - greater care must be taken when partially colouring lighter hair as the colours can run while rinsing.
  • If you mix the dye with conditioner and apply to pre lightened hair you can achieve some gorgeous pastel shades.

Directions dyes retail at around £3.99 per tub you can buy these from most hair stores, Paul's Hair World and Alternative clothing/ stores.
