Visiting Aberdeen: Ardoe House Hotel

Monday, May 08, 2017

Just before Christmas I had the opportunity to visit the beautiful Mercure Ardoe House Hotel in Aberdeen. Situated just outside the centre of the Granite City the hotel offers wonderful seclusion while still being close enough to pop into Aberdeen for a bite to eat or night out.
The 4 star hotel, which is actually a 19th century mansion, looks exactly like a fairytale castle, made to even more magical by the glittering, icy December day when I visited. My friend Michelle (Ananyah.com) and I made the long drive from Glasgow to Aberdeen on a Friday afternoon. To be honest the drive wasn’t all that bad given we had a playlist of musicals to keep us occupied, (I can’t wait to see Hamilton on stage now, the soundtrack was brilliant)

We were welcomed by a lovely lady on the reception who gave us our key and directed us to our room which was on the first floor. We had a double room with two large single beds. The staff were incredibly accommodating as I have a feather allergy and were able to supply synthetic pillows and duvet without any problems. I visit a lot of hotels and occasionally I’ve found some aren’t as helpful with this.

We had been due to attend a cooking masterclass that evening however unfortunately the chef was ill so instead we had dinner in Blairs, the hotel restaurant. We were not disappointed as the food was delicious. I had a tomato bruschetta to start and then a pumpkin gnocci which was lovely. For dessert I decided just to go for a large Baileys as I was stuffed after the first two courses. The house wine was also very palatable, so palatable that I finished off most of the bottle in the hotel bar after our meal.

After our meal and drinks we returned to our room and watched some films. The hotel was hosting a high school prom that evening in the main function room downstairs but thankfully we didn’t hear any of this and had a sound sleep.
The hotel facilities also include a full spa and swimming pool. I didn’t have the pleasure of visiting this time but I’ll definitely return in the future as I love a good spa day.

Before we headed home we went to Aberdeen's Union Square Shopping centre  for a browse and had lunch at Pizza Hut, the centre is huge and has loads of places to eat.
We also stopped at Dunnotar Castle as I've always wanted to visit, we only got halfway down the hill before aborting the mission as it was absolutely freezing. I'll try again in the summer.

I honestly can't recommend a visit to Ardoe House enough, I'd love to visit again soon and hopefully try out the spa as well as have a walk around the vast, beautiful hotel grounds.
I've stayed in a few Mercure hotels in the past and always had a lovely, comfortable time there,
Visit the Accor website for more information about Mercure hotels and how to book.
