Bedtime Books: Acid Row by Minette Walters

I love nothing better than to wind down at night cosy in bed with a good book.
I enjoy a good crime novel and Minette Walters is one of my favorite authors in this genre. Acid Row is one of Walters most well known novels although she has plently more which are also well worth a read.
I read this book in more or less one sitting as I just couldn't put it down. The author takes an already awful situation that most of us are affected by in some way and makes it altogether more uncomfortable and creepy.

Acid Row is the name given to a "sink" estate by its inhabitants who are mostly the unfortunates of society as well as the angry youths who mostly control the streets with violence.

A young, female doctor is visiting a patient in Acid Row, however she is unaware that he is a known paedophile.
On the other side of the estate, news has spread that a little girl has gone missing and fueled by rumour, despair, drugs and misinformation a vigilante mob has formed and locked down the estate ready to find the girl at any costs.... but is she really missing???
A riot starts and the police refuse to go into the estate which leaves the doctor stuck inside and the entire estate in turmoil.

Walters creates some fantastic characters in the book, without giving away too much information they all manage successfully to rise to the demands of their situations.

It is not an easy book to read and can be rather shocking in parts but I would highly reccomend reading it, although the subject may not be suitable for some of my younger readers so check with your parents first.

Acid Row by Minette Walters is available from most good bookshops and you can also buy this online at Amazon in paperback or for ebook readers such as the kindle.
